How to teach
composition
The principles of composition will be based on two of the important qualities of sound:
pitch and duration. The other sound qualities - intensity and timbre - are of less
importance in the initial stage, and they may be incorporated in the performance stages,
as we approach the final concert.
Stage A - The preparation
We will begin by composing a phrase of four bars. First we will instruct the students how
to do this: we begin by drawing a line across the page. On its left we will write the
meter: 4/4. On its right we will mark the two closing lines. Now we will divide the line
in three, and so we will get a line of four bars ready for composition.
Stage B - Rhythmic organization
We will suggest that the students fill in notes, according to the rhythmic values we have
learned (for example, a whole note, half notes, quarter notes and 8th notes). This will be
done through experiments in playing an open string. Each student will fill the values in
according to his will, choice, talent, etc. As a result we will have a line of rhythmic
values.
